Sotogrande History.
Sotogrande was created by the couple, Joseph McMicking and Mercedes Zóbel from the Philippines along with the support of their two nephews, Jaime and Enrique Zóbel. The idea was to build a Palm Beach in southern Europe. In 1962, the McMickings, bought five neighbouring farms with the idea of creating a luxurious residential development by the Mediterranean. There are a number of artificial lakes and five golf courses, including the all famous Valderrama Golf Club. The colourful, luxurious leisure port was completed in 1988.
Nowdays, Sotogrande is one of Spain most prestigious and secure residential complexes in all Costa del Sol, and considered one of the most sophisticated destinations in all Europe. With a stunning harbour, considered by many the best Marina in the Mediterranean, and the Santa Maria Polo Club which has become one of the most important Polo Clubs in the world, and already a tradition of summer afternoons for Sotogrande residents and visitors during the polo season.
Surrounding Areas.
Like any other city, Sotogrande does not exist in isolation. Surrounding it are the Mediterranean Sea—the main focus—and a cordon of majestic mountains that conceal a countryside rich in nature and authentic Andalusian culture. Although this rustic environment seems a world removed from the cosmopolitan melange that is Sotogrande, it is usually no more than half an hour’s drive distant. This brings the highly developed services of places such as Marbella and Málaga within easy reach, but conversely also opens up the many hidden treasures of the hinterland to residents on the coast; Sevilla, Córdoba, Granada’s Alhambra and the ski pistes of the Sierra Nevada are just a small sample of the delights on the doorstep of Marbella.
Gibraltar Airport.
The Gibraltar airport was formally owned by the Ministry of Defense for use by the Royal Air Force. Nowadays civilian operators use the airport too; currently the only scheduled flights operate to the United Kingdom and Spain.
Gibraltar Airport has the distinction of being the closest airport to the city that it serves, being only 500 metres from Gibraltar’s city centre. The airport is also used by people visiting the most southern edge of the Costa del Sol.
EasyJet is the largest scheduled international carrier at Gibraltar Airport with between 14 and 18 weekly scheduled flights to London Gatwick. Monarch Airlines currently operates seven flights weekly to London Luton and three flights weekly to Manchester Airport. British Airways flies seven times weekly into Gibraltar also from London Gatwick.
People from London, Manchester or Madrid can take good advantage of the Gibraltar airport as it is only 25 km away from the beautiful beaches, the golf courses and Polo fields of Sotogrande. Someone who lives in one of the above mentioned towns can easily live and work in their home towns and spend week ends or bank holidays in their second home at the Costa del Sol, just to play golf or enjoy the sunny weather at the Sotogrande beach or in their own gardens or terraces.
As the nearby Gibraltar airport makes it so easy – Don’t miss the opportunity of having a second home in Sotogrande far away from the usually rainy northern weather and the daily routine, and even more now that the property prices are sinking – even in the prestigious Sotogrande area.
