The Origins.
In 1947, Prince Alfonso’s father entrusted him with finding profitable real estate in Andalusia. During their journey from Gibraltar to Málaga in a Rolls-Royce Phantom fueled by charcoal, Prince Alfonso and his uncle were stopped in Marbella for a picnic. Captivated by the area, Prince Alfonso convinced his father to sell some of their wine cellars to purchase land in Marbella. Subsequently, he sold the land to individuals bearing notable last names like Bismarck and Metternich.
Decades of pampering the rich and famous and it all started with one man’s dream. One aristocrat’s caprices shaped the course of Marbella’s history. Upon hearing about the Marbella region, the eccentric and somewhat romantic Marquis Ricardo Soriano fell in love with the concept of a retreat in the sun. On this privileged position right on the seafront in Marbella and at the heart of the Golden Mile. In 1946 he inspired his cousin, Prince Maximilian, to see the Mediterranean for themselves. The following year, his son, Prince Alfonso, came to purchase a vacation home for the royal family.
In 1954, Prince Alfonso decided to sell his house in Marbella to the Rothschild family. With the proceeds, He purchased a prime beachfront Finca 4 km west of Marbella old town without setting foot on the land and transformed a farmhouse located on a spacious 24-acre estate into what is now known as the Marbella Club. The Hotel opened to the public 5 years later with just 20 bedrooms and quickly became popular among European royalty and aristocrats. This exclusive establishment quickly gained fame and attracted a diverse clientele, including Middle Eastern princes, Hollywood celebrities, and esteemed European families with long-standing lineage. This emblematic establishment further consolidated this status when Puerto Banús opened in 1970. Later it would become a member of the Leading Hotels of the World and of Relais and Chateaux.
The prince dedicated himself to every detail of his creation, overseeing everything from the architecture to the menus. Notably, renowned entertainers like Sammy Davis Jr. performed at the Marbella Club, and a close friend of the prince, who happened to be a Spanish nobleman with a direct lineage to 56 kings, served as the resident pianist. Esteemed guests, including the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, graced the establishment with their presence. The Marbella Club also attracted many visitors who arrived in style via helicopter.
