The survey, based on the opinions of over 12,000 expats representing 177 nationalities residing in 181 countries or territories, explores how expats feel about living and working abroad. The ranking considers crucial factors such as quality of life, ease of settling in, personal finance, and more.

The top 20 cities were selected from a pool of 49, and the rankings reflect the collective expat experience over the past year. The criteria include stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education, and infrastructure. Expert analysts and in-city contributors contributed to the scoring process.
The cities dominating the top 10 hail from Western Europe and Canada, with notable mentions of high-ranking cities in Australia and Japan. While the first and second positions remained consistent with the previous year, Australian cities have surged in the rankings. Notably, Amsterdam and Frankfurt have ceded their spots in the top ten, making way for a new entry. It’s worth noting that no UK cities made the cut in this year’s ranking.
Spain: Crowned as one of the World’s Best Country to live.
Spain emerges as a major winner this year, with a total of five cities making it to the top 20. Alicante and Valencia secured the second and third positions, respectively, with Valencia holding the top spot in the previous year’s list. InterNations notes commonalities among these Spanish cities, emphasizing ease of settling in, high quality of life, and strong rankings for personal finance, fostering welcoming cultures that enable an enjoyable and affordable life.
Madrid claimed the sixth position, credited to its robust digital life, favorable personal finances, and high quality of life. Barcelona also earned a spot in the top 20, securing the 13th position. The collective success of these Spanish cities underscores the country’s appeal as an expat-friendly and vibrant destination.

Situated in Andalucia on the Costa del Sol, this historic Mediterranean city boasts a rich cultural heritage, a pleasant climate, and renowned arts scenes, with the birthplace of Picasso adding to its allure.
Among the criteria that have led Forbes to place Malaga in this position is being one of the Spanish destinations with the highest tourist growth in recent years. This accolade crowns Malaga as a premier destination for living but also underscores its unmatched appeal as a thriving hub for work, with a robust economy and a welcoming environment for nomad professionals from all over the world.
Although it is mostly associated with the beach and the sun, the city is much more than that. But, the city also offer excellent health care, proximity to international airports, low crime rate, high quality of life, wide range of international schools, its gastronomy, supported by good weather throughout the year, as well as the price of housing were some of the main reasons for including Malaga on their list.

Expat Satisfaction in the United States Declines
In the latest Expat City Ranking by InterNations, the satisfaction of expats in the United States saw a decline. Unlike the previous year when Miami and New York City secured positions in the top 20, this year, no U.S. cities made the list. New York City, which was at number 16 last year, dropped significantly to the 39th position. Miami was not included in the list this year due to the number of responses.
The decline in New York City’s ranking is attributed to various challenges faced by expats, with the high cost of living being a significant concern. Expats reported struggles with aspects of life in the city, noting that while the job market thrives, the work-life balance suffers. The overall quality of life was also perceived as lacking, although the city performed well in specific subcategories. Expats ranked New York City sixth in leisure options and second for culinary variety and dining options.
Despite the challenges, the city’s vibrant leisure and culinary scenes continue to provide ample opportunities for residents to explore and enjoy their surroundings. The shift in rankings highlights the complex balance between professional opportunities and the overall quality of life experienced by expats in New York City.
