Istán Lake, also known as La Concepción Reservoir “Embalse de la Concepcion“, is located in the Sierra de las Nieves Natural Park, just northwest of Marbella, Spain. This picturesque reservoir provides water to the Costa del Sol and offers stunning mountain scenery, making it a peaceful nature retreat.

The Lake, as it is widely referred to, was created with the construction of the Presa de la Concepción (La Concepción Dam) and the Embalse de la Concepción (La Concepción Reservoir) in 1972, aimed at supplying water to the increasing population of Marbella and the Costa del Sol.

It is located northwest of Marbella, just a short drive from Marbella’s coastline.

The lake is situated along the Rio Verde watercourse, which gathers water from the Sierra de las Nieves mountains and discharges into the sea just to the east of Puerto Banus. This reservoir, extending 5 kilometers in length, has a capacity of 57 hm³ and covers a surface area of 214 hectares. In conjunction with smaller dams on the río Guadaiza, Guadalmina, and Guadalmansa, the reservoir supplies water to the municipalities of Marbella, Benalmádena, Fuengirola, Mijas, Benahavís, Estepona, Casares, and Manilva.

Normally, when the reservoir reachs its security limit of 80% of its capacity, with more than 46 million cubic metres, the junta de Andalucia order the release of water.

The lake is home to various species, including the otter, which is quite rare in the province of Malaga, as well as amphibians like the marbled newt and the tree frog. Additionally, the lake supports fish species such as rainbow trout and catfish.
